A midwife is a health professional who cares for mothers and newborns around childbirth, a specialization known as midwifery. The education and training for a midwife is similar to that of a nurse, in contrast to obstetricians and primatologists who are physicians

Decades of conflict and instability have disrupted Afghanistan’s basic health infrastructure. Women in particular have suffered from a lack of access to health services. As a consequence, maternal mortality among Afghan women is extremely high, therefore, Bost University feels and understand the importance of Midwife and to train professionals to make sure women in Afghanistan get access to professional health experts.

Goals of the Midwifery Program

  • Reducing maternal and child mortality and identifying and managing life-threatening events.
  • Be able to safely perform practical actions to promote safe motherhood and pregnancy health.
  • The midwife is able to give sound advice to the woman and her family.
  • Ability to work in a one-sided team to improve pregnancy health.
  • It is important to understand that learning is a long-term process that requires you to take full advantage of all opportunities, to be aware of new and up-to-date research, and to become a midwife in a variety of ways. Values the profession and, if necessary, participates in providing supervision to women and their families by developing their profession.

Midwifery Responsibilities

  • Provide necessary care, attention and advice to women for pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum period.
  • Performing births at home and in health centers and caring for the newborn.
  • Handling complications during pregnancy and childbirth in accordance with the principles of basic obstetric emergency services.
  • Provide basic services to women of childbearing age in accordance with the basic health care package BPHS.
  • Supervise the delivery of primary health care by community health workers in the community.
  • Encourage and train women and their families in health-related areas, including preparation for motherhood and childbirth.
  • Provide family planning services including counseling and, if possible, surgical methods.
  • Working on a referral system and sending the patient to another health center on time if needed.
  • Sharing knowledge, skills and abilities, teaching ability to nursing students and junior staff and ability to manage pregnancy and childbirth as a teacher.
  • Perform limited and selective administrative tasks such as clinic / health center management (if required) or coordinating specific training or extensive programs.
  • Maintain complete patient records and report to supervisor on time.
  • Participate in research, professional bodies / associations, committees and continuing education opportunities.
  • Follow the procedures and procedures of the established health facilities.
  • Working for the organization's goals, objectives and continuous quality improvement.
  • Innovation of safety, environmental, and infection prevention standards.
  • Participate in providing 24-hour, 7-day maternity services that may be required on an evening, night or on-call duty.
  • The midwife is responsible for maintaining and preserving parts of the report. Responsibility towards families, profession and to society.
